East Anglia Round up
I have now played and blogged about all the links courses in East Anglia bar Hunstanton which I have played a few times before. In my view Hunstanton and Brancaster are the two to play. The others each have sections of pure links golf but, for me, Brancaster has 'presence'.
Sheringham is a lovely place to play but much of it is cliff top rather than pure links. The seaward holes at Felixstowe Ferry are excellent and Great Yarmouth & Caister have made some remarkable holes in unpromising surroundings.
Hunstanton is tougher than Brancaster and it grows on me the more I play it. But Brancaster is an island of pure links golf, you can smell the sea, you may even have to drive through it's tides to get there. The sea is visible from almost every hole. It is an out and back layout and you are exposed to the wind, the change of the tides and under an emotional Norfolk sky. The grasses and dunes, the sweep of the holes, and the salty marshes are maintained, not remodelled, to accommodate us. And the members and club are so welcoming
